Magnesium is a key cardiovascular regulator which maintains electrical, metabolic, and vascular homeostasis. It also plays a key role in bone health, by assisting with the bioavailability of vitamin D.
Current evidence lends itself to the notion that supplementing both vitamins K synergistically with vitamin D improves bone and cardiovascular health to an even greater extent than if these vitamins we used as isolated supplements.
Many proteins which inhibit vascular calcification depend on Vitamin K for their expression. Consequently, vitamin K deficiency could potentially lead to vascular calcification, end-stage renal disease and loss of vascular integrity.
Considering studies which show as high as 97% of older subjects in a mixed population are vitamin K deficient, and the well-established importance of vitamin D in skeletal health and bone density, supplementation would be of great benefit to the elderly.
